LIMA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Keiko Fujimori was sworn in as president of Peru for the 2026-2031 term at a ceremony held at the Legislative Palace in Lima on Tuesday, where she outlined a "clear path" for the Andean country's development.
After receiving the presidential sash, Fujimori delivered her first speech as president, pledging to work toward measurable goals and maintain constant accountability.
In the "immediate term," her government will focus on "two fronts" of national emergency -- mitigating the El Nino weather phenomenon and prioritizing public safety.
She plans to launch a national contingency plan to "break with the logic of delayed response" and usher in an era of timely prevention.
With that in mind, she said, her government will aim to "reclaim" every neighborhood, highway and public space for Peruvian families, using all the tools the Constitution makes available to combat organized crime, drug trafficking and illegal mining.
To implement urgent measures against crime and extreme weather, she announced that the executive branch will issue emergency decrees and request that Congress grant the government legislative powers.
Fujimori said the second goal of her administration would be "improving the quality of life" of the people from pregnancy through old age by revamping social programs and public services.
The third goal will be to achieve fiscal sustainability by reorganizing public accounts, eliminating unnecessary spending, and responsibly managing state resources to build economic confidence, said Fujimori.
The new president took the opportunity to reaffirm that, under her administration, Peru's foreign policy will be strengthened, prioritizing regional integration by promoting agreements with the Pacific Alliance and the Andean Community.
Similarly, she plans to prioritize Peru's role in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and open "new opportunities for investment and cooperation with friendly countries in the Middle East."
Also sworn in at the ceremony were First Vice President Luis Galarreta and Second Vice President Miguel Torres, who also serves as president of the Senate. ■
