BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- China said Tuesday that it hopes Algeria will smoothly advance its political agenda.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks at a routine press conference when responding to a question about Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announcing not to seek a fifth presidential term, and recently large-scale demonstrations that broke out in the country.

Geng said that the stability of Algeria served the fundamental interests of its people and peace in the surrounding areas.

He said China adhered to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs and believed the Algerian people have the wisdom and ability to explore a path that suited their national conditions.
