LUSAKA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's anti-smuggling squads have intercepted three trucks laden with alcohol believed to be for Christmas celebrations, the country's revenue agency said on Monday.

Topsy Sikalinda, Corporation Communications Manager for the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), said two trucks were intercepted in the southern part of the country with forged documents purporting that they were carrying various furniture fittings.

The third truck was intercepted on another road in southern Zambia and parked in a bush where beer was being offloaded into small trucks.

The country, he said, would have lost about 700,000 Zambian kwacha (about 60,000 U.S. dollars) in revenue if the smuggled trucks were not intercepted.

"These are pure cases of forgery, false representation and attempted smuggling contrary to the customs and excise laws of Zambia," he said.

The seized alcohol and trucks, he said, will be forfeited to the government.

He warned that the revenue agency has intensified patrols in all border entries to curb smuggling and tax evasion.
