SEOUL, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- A South Korean man on Tuesday hurled a firebomb at a car carrying the country's top court chief, according to local media reports.

The 74-year-old, only identified by his surname Nam, threw a plastic bottle, filled with the inflammables, at a vehicle carrying Supreme Court Chief Justice Kim Myeong-su at about 9:05 a.m. local time (0005 GMT).

At the time, the car was entering the top court building in southern Seoul.

The attack set fire on one of the vehicle's front tires, but it was immediately extinguished by security guards.

No injury was reported. The elderly man was taken to the police for further investigations.

The 74-year-old allegedly staged a one-person protest against the court rulings in front of the top court's building for the past three months.

It came amid the ongoing investigation by prosecutors into a judiciary power abuse scandal, which occurred under the previous government of impeached president Park Geun-hye.

Former top court justices were questioned by prosecutors earlier this month on allegations that they engaged in the so-called "trial dealings," in which then Supreme Court ruled in the politically and diplomatically sensitive trials in favor of the policy directions of the ousted president.

The allegations stoked the distrust of court rulings and damaged the reputation of the judiciary branch.
