CAIRO, May 6 (Xinhua) -- At least three Sudanese people were killed and about 50 others wounded on Sunday in a tourist bus crash with a truck in a desert highway in Upper Egypt's province of Minya south of the capital Cairo, a security source told Xinhua.

"The bus was on its way from Khartoum to Cairo when it collided with a truck loaded with cement," the source explained, noting that the dead people included the 50-year-old Sudanese bus driver.

The victims have been moved to nearby hospitals in Minya.

Egypt suffers a high rate of traffic accidents that kill thousands of people every year due to lack of highway monitoring systems, inadequate road maintenance and negligence of traffic rules.

Traffic accidents in Egypt declined by 24.5 percent in 2017 to 11,100 cases from about 14,700 in 2016, according to a report from the country's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics released in March.

It pointed out that road accidents left 3,700 people dead and 14,000 injured in 2017 while killing 5,300 and wounding 18,600 in 2016.

Human error is responsible for about 80 percent of road accidents in the most populous Arab country, while vehicle technical problems and external factors like bad weather and poor road lights come next.
