RIO DE JANEIRO, March 30 (Xinhua) -- The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) will prioritize efforts to renew the contract of Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca after the World Cup, the organization's top official said on Friday.

Gareca has yet to commit to the position beyond football's showpiece tournament, to be played in Russia from June 14 to July 15.

"This board has always supported the (current) coaching staff," FPF president Edwin Oviedo told newspaper El Comercio. "It's our priority to extend the contract of Ricardo Gareca after the World Cup."

Gareca, appointed Peru coach in March 2015, was hailed as a national hero in November after leading the team to their first World Cup finals since 1982.

Oviedo said Gareca had told FPF officials he did not want to discuss a new deal until after the World Cup.

"I don't think it's an economic issue," Oviedo said. "There are many things to be considered and we are prepared to have that conversation with him when the time is right."
